Short Introduction
Politics is a popular topic in the UK but is one that many find hard to understand. Elections consistently have low turn-outs of voters and this is no surprise - many do not know which party to support, and may be disinclined to vote at all. In general if you understand the basic manifesto of the party you shouldn't have any worries with giving them your vote. Whilst individual candidates may suggest that they have particular policies or focuses, you can usually rely upon the party sticking to their base philosophies at a national level. It's important to make your vote count regardless of how you feel about the level of government the election is being held for - it's important that the government in control accurately represents the British public. The United Kingdom is an amalgamation of nations which prides itself on having a fair and democratic political system for it's citizens. There would appear to be a political party for each and every lifestyle and political leaning and this is exactly the way the British people like it. One of the most important political parties in the UK is the Labour Party, an organization which has been active within British politics since the beginning of the twentieth century. Labour Party replaced the Liberal Party as the direct competitor of the Conservative Party for government control and has rapidly gained dominance. Since 1997 the Labour Party has been in control, first with Tony Blair as party leader and recently with George Brown.
